@roostersanctuary sits off a 20 mile stretch of highway which connects two major interstates. The highway is used by truck drivers to avoid traffic in Denver. We work 12 to 15 hour days which means we are outside most of the day. The highway is not only visible, but very noisy. There is not an hour that goes by without at least three slat trucks driving by with anywhere from six to a dozen cattle on board. Once a month 2-3 trucks filled with well over 20 horses each drive by on their way to Canada.
Now for the conservative math; 2 trucks per hour, for 12 hours, each containing 6 cows; that total is 144.
So far 2018 has brought us 121 new rescues. That number does not balance the number of lives which pass by the sanctuary in one day on their way to slaughter. Additionally this is just one line of traffic to just one slaughterhouse.
We all know the numbers 1910 chickens per second; 9 cows per second. What about the financial numbers. A sanctuary with only 50 animals earns $250,000 per year. Another sanctuary with only 4 animals earns over $100,000 per year. Sanctuaries with mammals get more attention than sanctuaries with birds. Typically sanctuaries founded by males get more attention than sanctuaries founded and operated by females. Too much sexism and speciesism in a community that should be striving to end both.
We currently have over 370 animals in our care and annual donations for Little Rainbow and Rooster Sanctuary do not come close to $100,000.
No animal which we have rescued or care for have been paid for nor bartered for. To buy an animal keeps those trucks moving forward to the slaughter line. 121 animals rescued in less than 4 months yet other sanctuaries have to buy animals. Just think of that for a second. We can take in more animals than most sanctuaries have without paying nor bartering for them while sanctuaries with just a few animals feel the need to buy animals. It’s puzzling to say the least.
